As we all have probably experienced on more than one occasion, impending
disaster is usually just lurking around the corner. This is especially true when
it comes to bagpipes. One of the ways to prevent impending disaster from
becoming a reality is to be prepared.
Every piper should be caring a kit in his/her case with what I feel are the
following essential items:
- Extra chanter reed/s. Every piper should have more than one
playable reed on them at all times.
- A roll of tape. You never know when your going to have to
flatten that chanter.
- Exacto Knife: Good for cutting hemp, carving your chanter
or shaving the reed a bit.
- Razor Blade: Same as above, but you can't carve a chanter
very well with it.
- Hemp: You might need some to steady the drone on the tuning
pin or tighten the joint in the stocks.
- Bees Wax: If you don't use black wax you'll definitely need
this. Even if you do it's not bad to have in case somebody else is ill prepared.
- Black Wax: Same as above.
- Awl: You'll use this to open up the reed throat if it
becomes necessary.
- Orthodontic rubber bands: These things come in handy for
adjusting chanter reeds, shutting off drone reeds and such.
- Screw Driver: You will only need this if you play the Ross
Bag or feel like having a cocktail :).
